Audience: Grade 3 - 6 teachers not having had the opportunity to attend the Math Summer Institute, resource teachers, elementary school administrators

How can students in grades 3-6 achieve a deep understanding of multiplication that allows them to develop fluency with their basic facts that goes beyond recall to explain and justify their thinking? Experience the six tactics that make up the Fact Tactics™ Fluency Program designed to shift from drill-and-kill instruction to an approach that helps students make sense of multiplication while developing automaticity and procedural fluency.

Objectives:
Participants will:
 - Examine structures for developing fluency grounded in multiplicative reasoning.
 - Make sense of the Six Fluency Tactics.
 - Learn how to implement the Fact Tactics™ Fluency Program in your school setting.

Note: : This webinar is offered as two half days. Participants are strongly encouraged to purchase the Fact Tactics Fluency Program for use following the webinar. It can be purchased here

Algebra Institute with Ed Nolan & Thomasenia Adams

January 15 & March 28
with Ed Nolan

thomasenia-adams

February 22 & April 18
with Thomasenia Adams

January 15: Expressions, Equations, and Rate of Change
Delve into tasks and teaching strategies that will engage all learners in key the algebra outcomes. In the morning session, participants explore equivalent expressions, link representations of algebraic expressions, and use patterns to generalize the rules of exponents. In the afternoon session, participants build on their initial learning through exploring representations of patterns, examining algebraic reasoning through the use of manipulatives, and connecting graphical and algebraic representations.

February 22: Linear Functions
Participants will focus on the key features and characteristics of linear functions. In the morning session, they will make sense of the concept of slope and its development, distinguish between the various forms of linear functions, and explore key features of linear functions in multiple contexts and representations. In the afternoon, participants will examine relationships between two variables, explore how representations of relationships can answer different questions, and create/modify/customize tasks that align to the needs of their students.

March 28: Systems of Equations and Systems of Inequalities
In examining algebraic reasoning within systems of equations, participants will explore different types of solutions to systems of equations. In the afternoon session, they will explore the impact of constraints on solutions to systems of inequalities and create tasks that demonstrate algebraic reasoning.

April 18: Absolute Value, Exponential, and Quadratic Equations
This webinar will focus on the relationships that are key to algebra success after the deep and rich understanding of linear functions. In the morning session, they compare and contrast absolute value and exponential functions, both in and out of context. In the afternoon session, participants will explore ways to support multiplying and factoring binomials and examine the link between multiple representations of quadratic functions.
