Embracing A Culture of  Belonging

February 12-13, 2024

Brene Brown states, “Fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be to be accepted. Belonging, on the other hand, doesn’t require us to change who we are; it requires us to be who we are.”   (The Gifts of Imperfection).

We need educational institutions where people belong. Our ability to provide such will lead to both student success and improved wellbeing for all.

Belonging is a basic human need.  It is important that a student feels a connection to the educational environment but equally important is the sense of belonging for faculty and staff. People who can bring their authentic self to the workplace are more likely to be engaged and thus contribute to the success of the organization and the individuals therein.

The theme invites potential presentations in so many meaningful areas:

  • Equity
  • Inclusion
  • Resilience
  • Members of a minority language community
  • Innovation
  • Wellbeing
  • Student agency
  • Differentiation
  • Teaching-Learning
  • Mindset
  • Diversity
  • Reconciliation
  • Engagement
  • Kindness
  • Critical thinking
  • Empathy
  • Acceptance

And this is just a partial list as there are over a hundred possibilities.  The Conference Selection Committee challenges you to have your voice heard.  You have a great deal to offer educators at all levels across the province – this is the time for action.  LCEEQ invites you to submit a proposal for a sixty- or seventy-five-minute presentation.

If your proposal is accepted you will join an exciting team of invited speakers including:

  • Kristin Anderson
  • John Tyler Binfet
  • Phyllis Dalley
  • Vivett Dukes
  • Deinera Exner-Cortens
  • Gail Markin
  • Lesley Trudel
  • Melissa Villella
  • Paul Zanazanian

Consideration will be given to individual and small groups of presenters. Please note that submissions deemed commercial will not be retained. If you are a member of a School Board/Association affiliated with LCEEQ it is important that you inform your organization of your interest to submit a proposal to participate as the Board/Association will be responsible for any financial support (e.g. release time…).

Please complete the application form so that your proposal can be reviewed by the Selection Committee.

When describing your presentation please provide sufficient detail and remember that your session description will be used as you word it in the programme documentation provided to participants. Clarity is important.
