LCEEQ recently offered two webinars. One was in collaboration with AAESQ focusing on the impact of Bill 96. John McMahon, Director General at Vanier College, presented The Impact of Bill 96 in CEGEP. A hundred participants attended this informative session. If you missed the one-hour presentation and you are involved with students entering CEGEP you can watch the recording here.

May is Mental Health Awareness month. To kick off the month on the right foot, LCEEQ offered an evening webinar with Dr. Gretchen Moran Marsh entitled The Psychology of Happiness. The interactive webinar provided worthwhile information about a happy life. Dr. Gretchen proposed that there are three elements needed. Access the recording here to determine if these are part of your life. (password for access: lceeq2024)

A Major Challenge Accomplished

In the September 2022 edition of the Newsletter (089) we reported on a counting challenge:

“A Grade 5 class in the Saint Lazare area has adopted a very interesting challenge that will not only help them achieve a better understanding of what it takes to make “a million”, but in doing so they can reach out to other children and families in need through the Ronald McDonald House Charity.”

At that time, to help the students in their effort LCEEQ asked: “Reagan to record a list of teachers and classes of students who join in the cause. When her students have reached the magic million we will offer a random draw of one hundred dollars worth of books to be added to the class library of the lucky winner.”

The challenge has continued with consecutive classes and the current group is proud to announce:

“We are in Grade 5 in Ms. Niedan's class at Evergreen. We finished counting 1,000,000 tabs on April 25th. Ms. Niedan started counting with her students in November 2021. Many teachers in different schools helped us by sending tabs. The winner of the LCEEQ contest is Catherine Patenaude from Terry Fox School -- congratulations! We are going to bring all of the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House on June 12th. Thank you for your support!

The First Youth Post-Secondary Transition Workshop Deemed a Success

yptsc

As reported in previous editions, the former Youth Transition Committee (YTC) was resurrected this year in the form of the Youth Post-Secondary Transition Committee (YPSTC). The Committee, managed by Mark Sutherland, held a day-long, in-person workshop on April 19th.

Avery Rueb, a faculty member at Vanier College and member of the YPSTC Planning Committee, animated the workshop that focused on transversal competencies like collaboration, time management, creativity, perseverance, and decision-making. The interactive session provided the opportunity for educators in youth, CEGEP, and Adult and Vocational Education to exchange together. A primary objective of the day was to provide the opportunity for individuals at these different levels to have a better understanding of what happens at the other levels.

Ninety-eight percent of those who responded to the online evaluation stated that other exchanges should be scheduled in the academic year to come. One participant provided an incentive for the Committee to continue planning in stating, “ I really appreciate the opportunity to meet and collaborate with stakeholders in the English Education Community. The experience is always enriching and the topics and discussions inspiring.”
